A Dozen Zines for 2025
Zines! Yes, I'm Still Making Zines
Let’s revisit the original idea: put out a zine a month throughout 2025 because zines are fun and it’s a nice way to keep the creative pursuit fresh.
Did it happen that way? No, it absolutely did not. I put out the first one and I’m very pleased with it, but after that life got in the way and it quickly became clear that doing it in that way wasn’t going to be a good approach. It was simply too much and became a burdensome source of stress instead of the fun thing it was intended to be.
Not giving up on zines, though. Not by a long shot. An adjusted approach is clearly in order, however.
Here’s the new plan: work on zines, put them out when they’re good to go. Pretty straightforward and probably how I should have done it in the first place.
On this page, I’ll update info about zines that are in the works and completed. When a new zine is released, I’ll send out an email to the mailing list and post about it. To be notified, make sure you’re either subscribed to the RSS feed or (better yet) make sure you’re signed up to the mailing list, which you can do using the form at the very bottom of the page.
And don’t forget: if you back the Japan travel book project before it publishes in mid-2026, you get the first dozen zines included.
Each zine will be available in two versions:
- A DIY physical zine. The end product is basically the same as the first one, but it’s cheaper because I provide you with the print files and you can put the zine together yourself at home. This is what I recommend.
- A digital zine. All the same good contents, but in PDF and ebook formats for your digital consumption and enjoyment.
Eventually, I’d like to do proper print runs of the more popular zines, but there are no concrete plans for that yet. If that changes, I’ll post about it.
Anyway, on to the zines:
[In Progress] Rolling the Dice on Urban Experience
This will be a very nerdy text about using various ordinary objects as intermediaries in experiencing the urban environment. Loosely, it will be an invitation to play with perception and psychogeography, using objects to help us break out of our usual modes of observation and interaction with the world around us.
Reminder: The best and cheapest way to get these zines is to just back my travel book project
Why? Because I'm lazy. And if you back the project, I'm just gonna throw in the zines anyway. Less work for me, a greater quantity of questionable content for you.
I'm not gonna stop you if you want to buy a zine on its own, just want to make it clear that this is an option.

[In Progress] Hidden in a Crowded Bowl
Miso soup seems like a simple enough dish, but the closer you look, the more you’ll find hidden in its cloudy depths. In this zine, I’ll be providing an introduction to the surprising complexity and richness of this staple of Japanese cuisine.

[Completed] How to Get Lost in Tokyo Like You Really Mean It
Getting intentionally lost is one of the best ways to experience a new place, and I can’t think of a better place than Tokyo to get well and truly lost. This zine is something of a manifesto on getting lost, a love letter to joyfully not knowing where the hell you are. And though it’s focused on Tokyo, the spirit of it should apply to explorations all over the world (just be careful, not everywhere is as safe for getting lost).
This zine will release on or before Friday 2025-01-31.
THE ZINE IS OUT! Details for the second zine coming soon. Getting set up with various distribution platforms, currently available on Kindle or from my Gumroad, will add more options as they go online.
